Hammer of Gods: Final Audio Broadcast
We bid goodbye now. Our singer and songwriter Gergo is leaving to the USA, and he decided to keep making music as a solo artist: the story of Hammer of Gods came to an end. This is a retrospective of an almost imaginary band. Its existence was always highly improbable and reality sadly won out in the end. Still we managed to create music for five years. This small retrospective is to say goodbye to the project with compiling our best songs.
The first Hammer of Gods song was “Robert Plant” in 2005. This one was Gergo’s song intended for the Moog’s first EP originally but with fellow bandmate Csabi singing the lead vocal, the new project was started.
In the spring of 2005 we also recorded Almost Famous, a studio impro with Csabi on drums, Gergo on guitar and roto’s, and Si Vous D’Ici bedroom version. During the summer of 2005 “July Delight” was born as well as some other folky tunes with tuned down guitars. By the winter 2006 we had six songs recorded, that is Gergo recorded bits over the weeks and then tailored them into songs piece by piece, at times bringing down the results to the Sark parties on an ipod to show it to friends. A lost song, “Xenka” was recorded at that time, which one night played at a party but we lost the master disk afterwards. This was our homemade/DIY period, or bedroom lo-fi. Playing around with poorly recorded guitars and singing lyrics written on park benches used to be so much fun.
In 2006 we decided we could try to play these songs as a band and Csabi brought Andris to play guitar in and Andris brought Mez as a drummer and Gergo brought former singer collaborator Zsofi and then Arpi from EZ Basic joined too on bass so we had some pretty crowded rehearsals in the homeliest abandoned factory hall in Ujpest during the summer/autumn of 2006. We made our debut in Kultiplex, then one of our favorite venues, since then it was demolished. We received signs from above that it will not do: while getting the gear from the rehearsal room Andris and Gergo was stuck in the factory elevator with all lights out for half an hour (it certainly seemed more) only to be freed by the alcoholic mechanic and since the elevator crashed upon arriving at the ground floor, the show was played with some amp tubes damaged which surely add some tinge of lo fi sound to the performance.
After that first show the band gained some kind of existence as a concert outfit, but it never really got past the level of playing to the crowd we met every week at the Gumipop parties. At any rate it was always fun to play and to enjoy imaginary successes on stage - the kick we got out of it was very real. By mid-2007 by Csabi and Zsofi leaving, the sound got more focused around two guitars, Andris and Gergo. During the summer of 2007 we recorded our first band effort, doing all the music in two days in August, and rewriting all lyrics in the autumn so that the record came out in February 2008. “Kannibal Party Tonight”, or as we call it in the band, “Kraut” is surely worth checking out, it used to be a concert favorite of ours. We as the outfit Mez-Arpi-Andris-Gergo gave a couple of heavy-psychedelic-repetitive-noisy shows before Arpi quitting at the end of 2008.
At the end of 2008 Gergo’s interest turned back towards the folk and cowboy stuff and after Andris and Gergo giving a couple of acoustic performances we decided to record an acoustic album, which became Cat vs Snake in 2009. We opened for Six Organs of Admittance in a movie theatre in Budapest (Toldi), the show was a one-time experiment since after that the yearning for the noisy stuff got stronger again in the band. Now with Roli on bass we went on with playing the small clubs for our noise rock kicks. But as the Budapest indie scene practically disappeared over the years, we were a bit more disillusioned with trying to carry on the 2007/2008 music.
Summer 2010 Gergo had some more alternate tunings and the band turned into playing fully repetitive music during the summer of 2010. The three shows given at A38, at a festival in Esztergom and in Trafo Budapest were our loudest - still we saw couples hugging and slow dancing to this music. At the end of the year, the EP Heal was formed of the tuned down guitar jams, now with some more production experience we could make it sound as our music was always meant to sound like.
Heal came out in February 2011. Andris quit the band in the spring of that year. We went on as a power trio with Mez and Roli. Adam joined on guitar for our show in Dürer, and so we gave our best show so far. And then we realized we ran out of time - bandmates came and went, ideas and directions were experimented with, and still the year 2012 came when Gergo will move to the USA for a long while. He decided to make a solo album - so it is time to say goodbye to Hammer of Gods. Every moment spent with this band during the last five years was worth it, either suffering or magic, making music that was completely unnecessary and out of touch with anything happening around us, but exactly because being unnecessary, it was thrilling and sometimes the sweetest thing.
